About TUMCREATE

TUMCREATE is a multidisciplinary research platform of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) at the Singapore Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE). We are partnering with universities, public agencies, and industry to advance future technologies.

Our public-private research partnership program, HEARTwise - Heart Failure Assessment with Reliable Technology using Wearables and In Vitro Diagnostics - is funded by Singapore’s National Research Foundation (NRF) and represents a collaborative effort between the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the National University Health System (NUHS), the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS), and the National University of Singapore (NUS). Within the TUMCREATE HEARTwise team, we are developing a novel in vitro diagnostic readout platform for stochastic point-of-care sensing.

As a member of the HEARTwise team, you will collaborate within an interdisciplinary consortium comprising leading experts in cardiology, telemedicine, biomedical engineering, acoustics, data privacy, and industry.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled researcher with proven expertise in mechanical engineering and image analysis for medical technology (MedTech) applications. Within HEARTwise, you will lead the development of a laboratory prototype for single-analyte sensing at TUMCREATE. The prototyping of microfluidic pumps will be further supported by Fraunhofer EMFT in Munich. In collaboration with the Mechanobiology Institute, NUS, assay development will be conducted, and the prototype will be validated in a pilot clinical diagnostic study.

This is a fixed-term contract for a period of 3 years.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a laboratory prototype featuring programmable sample positioning and an integrated microscope unit.
  • Verify the technology against requirements and validate assays in a pilot clinical study.
  • Collaborate with experts in cardiology, telemedicine, biomedical engineering, acoustics, and data privacy.
  • Write scientific manuscripts, contribute to project reports, and present findings at international conferences and stakeholder meetings.

Key Competencies

  • At least 1 year of proven expertise in the medical technology domain.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to communicate complex analytical results to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, international research environment.

Qualification Requirements

  • We are seeking a candidate with a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering and a proven track record in medical device prototyping and image analysis as well as experience in diagnostics, in particular in vitro diagnostics.
  • Ideally, the candidate has an interdisciplinary education that facilitates collaboration with biomedical engineers.
  • Proficiency in Python programming is recommended to further develop and advance image analysis algorithms.

What we offer

  • A collaborative and inclusive world-class research environment.
  • Opportunities for professional development.
  • Engagement with a leading international team addressing interdisciplinary challenges in heart failure management.

Applications

Please submit the following essential documents to hr@tum-create.edu.sg:

  • Cover letter
  • CV with outlines (work statements) of the main technical or organizational challenges you encountered and how they were handled, and whether the chosen approach worked or failed. You are required to support all claims with quantitative evidence and clearly identify remaining gaps or negative results.
  • University transcripts

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

We look forward to your application!
