About TUMCREATE

Fostering bilateral research exchanges between the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the world’s leading universities, local institutions, and public agencies in Singapore.

Founded in 2010

TUMCREATE was founded in 2010 to foster research collaborations between Singapore and the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Since 2012, it is a multidisciplinary research platform at the Singapore Campus for Research Excellence And Technological Enterprise (CREATE). TUMCREATE is joining forces with local and international universities, public agencies, and industry partners for the advancement of future technologies. 

In its first research phase from 2010 to 2016, focus was set on electromobility in megacities. In its second research phase until 2021, TUMCREATE took on the challenge of defining the ultimate public transport system for Singapore through a vision of public transport involving electric autonomous vehicles from 2030 onwards. In April 2022, TUMCREATE’s latest 5-year programme Proteins4Singapore was launched.

Milestones

Phase 1: The Centre for Electromobility in Megacities (2010 – 2016)

TUMCREATE broke new ground in the field of electric vehicle research and development. Over 120 researchers, scientists and engineers as well as more than 12 Chair Professors conducted pioneering research in ten different fields. These included new battery materials and storage systems, innovative EV designs, low-energy air-conditioning, transport system optimisation, and energy systems.

30 inventions were made during Phase 1 and the team won the Germany eCarTec Award for Innovation and the Singapore Land Transport Excellence Award.

Phase 2: Towards the Ultimate Public Transport System (2016 – 2021)

The international research team worked on integration of the Singaporean bus system into a fully-connected, new shared-mobility system encompassing flexible and fixed-route services, along with low to high passenger capacity services. Intelligent passenger information systems would provide good connectivity to the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network. TUMCREATE introduced the concept of a Dynamic Autonomous Road Transit (DART) system that consists of a fleet of modular mixed-size electric autonomous road-based vehicles with highly secured vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-intelligent infrastructure communication, realising an efficient, and comfortable mobility service.

TUMCREATE: Excellent Research within the TUM Campus Singapore

Since its inception, TUMCREATE has successfully managed various multidisciplinary projects within its mobility programmes, including technology assessment, prototyping, talent development, and entrepreneurship in collaboration with academic and industry partners in Singapore. With its latest large-scale programme Proteins4Singapore, TUMCREATE added a complex, cutting-edge life science programme to its portfolio. The research programme focuses on alternative and sustainable sources of proteins and the engineering of these proteins for specific functions in food that are both nutritious and acceptable. Proteins4Singapore as a food research and innovation platform is enabling Singapore to provide highly nutritive, savoury, and functional protein-based foods.

TUMCREATE offers a unique proposition for Singapore to partner with the Technical University of Munich as well as its German and European network to solve global challenges. The areas of collaboration with TUM already include life sciences, medical technologies, quantum computing, and energy research.
