Project Title: Platform for Interconnected Micro-Grid Operation


TUMCREATE is a research platform for the improvement of Singapore's public transportation, including the deployment of electric and autonomous mobility. Researchers from Technical University Munich and Nanyang Technological University join forces and are funded by Singapore’s National Research Foundation as part of the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE).In TUMCREATE, over 100 scientists, researchers and engineers work together, led by Professors from the Technical University of Munich and Nanyang Technological University. The Mission of TUMCREATE is to seek the ultimate public transport system for the people of Singapore. About this Position

The research group Electrification Suite & Test Lab (ESTL) in TUMCREATE is working on the topic of microgrid optimization and management in a competitive electricity environment. A project is currently being established with industry partners & local universities, utilizing cutting-edge technologies to enable the microgrid integration in the tropical urban environment and enhance electricity system stability in Singapore. This project aims at creating the platform for interconnected micro-grid operation (PRIMO) which is capable of (1) maintaining safe operation of the local micro-grid by (2) cost-optimal control of flexible distributed energy systems (DES), i.e. waste-to-energy plants (W2E), battery energy storage systems (BESS), demand side flexibility (DSF) and electric vehicles with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) systems, (3) coordination with neighbouring micro-grids and (4) participation in the national electricity market.

The goal of this work will be to develop and implement the fundamental building blocks of the PRIMO platform to a proof-of-concept state with a focus on plug-and-play integration DSF and V2G systems, which is to be demonstrated in an exemplary hardware setup.

The main tasks are:

  1. Development and implementation of the PRIMO interface for plug-and-play integration of general DES assets in coordination with all project partners.
  2. Integration of models for V2G & DSF assets in the microgrid management system and implementation of user interface for V2G & DSF users for demonstration purposes.
  3. Hardware set-up to demonstrate multi-micro-grid management capabilities.

What we expect

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in electrical engineering or a related field
  • Excellent academic record / independent, precise and scientific working style
  • Good knowledge of Electric Power Flow / Optimal Power Flow / Numerical Optimization
  • Experience with Python / MATLAB
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills in both written and spoken English and ability to work with people from different backgrounds and cultures
