TUMCREATE is a research platform for the improvement of Singapore's public transport, which includes electric mobility to reduce emissions from road transport. Researchers from Technical University Munich and Nanyang Technological University join forces and are funded by Singapore’s National Research Foundation as part of the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE).
About this position
Singapore has excellent geological conditions for favourable underground heat flows. This would put the state in a prime location for geothermal potential. Against this background, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and TUMCREATE have been granted funding for a project called "Geothermal-driven technologies for passive enabling of urban sustainability solutions". The project aims to physically confirm Singapore’s hydrothermal potential by drilling a few near-surface and deep geothermal wells. The study focuses primarily on developing a better understanding of Singapore's geology and assessing underground geothermal resources.
While the active emissions of geothermal energy extraction are negligible, their embodied emissions play a major part. The extracted energy could have multiple applications such as power generation, space cooling, desalination, etc. Using life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost assessment (LCCA) we plan to estimate the costs and environmental impacts of geothermal energy extraction and use. Through this analysis, we expect to identify the most cost effective and emission saving energy extraction method and application. The identified applications will be compared to existing technologies (e.g. natural gas power plant) and competing alternative applications (e.g. solar PV power plant). The annual emission savings that the use of geothermal energy could offer for Singapore will be evaluated.
Academic knowledge of LCA and LCCA, ideally with hands-on experience in various use cases
Understanding of state-of-the-art LCA tools and databases is a plus (e.g. SimaPro, ecoinvent)
Understanding of different power generation, space cooling and desalination technologies
Good understanding of different geothermal energy extraction methods
Knowledge of the existing energy system and emission profile of Singapore is an advantage
Excellent academic record and independent, precise and reliable working style
Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills in both written and spoken English
