The Technical University Munich (TUM) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) join forces with the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and A*STAR’s Singapore Institute of Food and Biotechnology Innovation (SIFBI) to research plant-based proteins.

Job Purpose/Objective of the Position
We are offering a PhD student position starting in January 2023. The project aims at creating innovative urban agro-food systems with focus on plant and algae biomass production for food use. The task within the position will be biotechnological processing of the biomass to liberate and characterize the protein fraction. The final goal is to contribute to building up a more sustainable and circular bioeconomy.
Being involved in planning and setting up a small-scale bioprocess and biotech laboratory
Accessing protein from different food resources (plants as well as microorganisms)
Comprehensive analysis of the lipid and protein fraction of the biomass
Setting up and optimizing novel strategies for enzyme production in microbial cultures (including screening for promising strains)
Screening and optimization of different bioctalytic methods for protein extraction
Preparation of research reports, presentations and publications in English
Supervision of undergraduate students
Master’s in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Bioprocess Engineering or a related field
Ability to operate analytical devices such as HPLC, FPLC, GC-MS, LC-MS and to perform basic protein chemical methods such as SDS-PAGE, molecular biology methods, such as cloning and expression of recombinant proteins
Hands-on experience with hydrolase enzyme systems for biomass processing and fractionation would be advantageous
Experience in cultivating different autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms
Multidisciplinary nature of the project requires strong translational skills for generated data and insights
Excellent English writing and communication skills for working in an international research team
Good interpersonal and teamworking skills
