About WSSB:

The project is a collaboration with the Werner Siemens-Chair of Synthetic Biotechnology (WSSB) on the TUM campus in Garching, Germany. The WSSB develops sustainable solutions for the production of fine chemicals based on biotechnological processes. Applications range from the chemical to the pharmaceutical and food industry. The WSSB was involved in planning the TUM Algae Tec Center at the Ludwig Bölkow campus in Ottobrunn for the large-scale production of biofuels and fine chemicals using microalgae.

 

Job Purpose:

We are offering a PhD student position starting in January 2023 at the TUMCREATE campus in Singapore. The project aims at creating innovative urban agro-food systems with focus on plant and algae biomass production for food use. The task within the position will be on-site cultivation of microalgae in a vertical farming setup utilizing an agricultural waste stream. The final goal is to contribute to building up a more sustainable and circular bioeconomy.

 

Your Qualifications and Competences:

  • Master’s degree in either Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Bioprocess Engineering or a related field
  • At least 1 year of experience in this field 
  • Ability to operate analytical devices such as HPLC, GC-MS and LC-MS
  • First hands-on experience in lab-scale cultivation of photosynthetic microorganisms and/or their symbiotic relations with plants would be advantageous
  • Experience in operating a photobioreactor system
  • First-hand experience in medium to large-scale cultivation of autotrophic microorganisms
  • First-hand experience in planning and upscaling fermentation setups would be advantageous
  • Multidisciplinary nature of the project requires strong translational skills for generated data and insights
  • Excellent English writing and communication skills for working in an international research team
  • Good interpersonal and teamworking skills

 

Your Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Being involved in planning and setting up a small-scale bioprocess and biotech laboratory
  • Setting up and optimizing photobioreactor systems for microalgae cultivation
  • Establishing and optimizing co-cultivation systems of plants and microalgae
  • Comprehensive analysis of agricultural waste streams
  • Establishing and optimizing microalgae cultivation systems utilizing agricultural waste streams
  • Preparation of research reports, presentations and publications in English
  • Supervision of undergraduate students
