Overview

The Energy and Power Systems Department (EPSD) is doing research on innovative solutions to decarbonise Singapore's grid and to foster integration of renewable energies and electric vehicles.
Currently, the main topics are:

  • Grid integration of renewable energies
  • Grid integration of electric vehicles
  • Networked microgrid operation
  • Internet-of-Things and smart sensing

At the moment, EPSD is involved in the following in the following projects:

In January 2012, during Phase I of TUMCREATE, EPSD was founded as “RP 8 – Energy Management” whose main topics were charging strategies for electric vehicles considering battery constraints, charging infrastructure optimisation of electric taxis and analysis of the ASEAN power system.

In Phase II of TUMCREATE from March 2016 to September2021, EPSD was named “ESTL – Electrification Suite and Test Lab”. The department's main tasks were charging scheduling of electric buses and the proposed DART system, mitigation of the grid impact of fast charging electric vehicles and integration of renewable energies.

Aside from its ongoing projects, EPSD is currently exploring possible future projects to decarbonise Singapore's energy and power system.

In 2018, EPSD developed a first version of its tool MESMO (formerly FLEDGE) that utilises optimisation methods for distribution grids.

Research

Grid integration of renewable energies

Given its small land size, Singapore's potential for renewable energies is low. Solar photovoltaics (PV) on rooftops, building facades or floating islands are the most feasible options. However, with rapid changes in weather in the region, the intermittency of PV poses a challenge to power grid stability. EPSD is working on methods to mitigate adverse effects – particularly by use of battery-electric vehicles. Currently, we are also working on a project on Singapore's geothermal potential and its applications.

Aside from options within Singapore, we also look for import options such as other ASEAN countries, but also countries as far away as Australia (see our publication on a cost-optimal HVDC connection from Australia to Singapore in Energies).

Our analyses take into account emissions of all included components using life cycle assessment.

Grid integration of electric vehicles

Singapore started deploying electric vehicles on its roads. One component of the Land Transport Authority's (LTA) Land Transport Master Plan 2040 is “cleaner energy fleets” with for instance, low-emission vehicles such as battery-electric vehicles or hybrid vehicles. EPSD and CMRD at TUMCREATE are involved in the SITEM project that involves a lot of governmental institutions and whose goal is to analyse the impact of road transport electrification on Singapore's transport and power system. This includes electrification of buses, passenger cars, private hire vehicles and taxis.

Networked micro-grid operation

With deployment of more distributed energy resources such as solar PV, district cooling plants and electric vehicles with vehicle-to-grid capacity, operating the grid gets more challenging. Singapore is interested in micro-grids and their operation, as well as the inter-connected operation of micro-grids or a micro-grid and the main grid.

In 2020, the PRIMO project that deals with this topics was launched. The project is funded unter EMA's and SIT's EDGE programme. See the PRIMO project page for further details.

Internet-of-Things and smart sensing

An Intra-CREATE seed project called “Improving fault-resilience of Singapore's IoT infrastructure through smart sensing and distributed consensus” between TUMCREATE and NTU was launched in April 2021.

The project aims to propose a solution to improve the reliability and fault-tolerance of Internet-of-Things (IoT) netowrks and devices and to reduce life-cycle costs of the existing IoT infrastructure without the need for additional hardware. The goal is to ensure energy-efficient and
cost-efficient operation, supporting Singapore's Smart Nation Initiatives.

MESMO

Since 2018, EPSD has been developing this versatile tool that utilises optimisation methods for distribution grids. This open-source tool comes with models for distributed energy resources and is currently being used in the SITEM and PRIMO project.

In April 2019, our publication “Electrification of Road Transport in Singapore and its Integration into the Power System” was selected one of the top 15 papers of 2018 of the Wiley journal “Energy Technology”.
