A Profession is Changing from Art to Science 07.04.2017

Professor Fritz Frenkler, Programme Principal Investigator (Design for Autonomous Mobility) of TUMCREATE shared on Industrial Design: A Profession is Changing from Art to Science as part of the CREATE Principal Investigators' series on 7 Apr 2017.

Prof Frenkler shared that industrial designers should work closely with other disciplines to develop products and services. He took the audience through the principles of industrial design, the history of design in the world today, and design of the future.

The seminar covered some examples of good design.

"Design is developed in relation to science."

Prof Frenkler shared the Dieter Rams' 10 Principles of "Good Design":

  1. Good design is innovative.
  2. Good design makes a product useful.
  3. Good design is aesthetic.
  4. Good design makes a product understandable.
  5. Good design is unobtrusive.
  6. Good design is honest.
  7. Good design is long lasting.
  8. Good design is thorough down to the last detail.
  9. Good design is environmentally friendly.
  10. Good design is as little design as possible.

He also covered some of the challenges of a designer's profession, which includes the protection of the profession, and noted the importance of a brand's "Design DNA", as well as the design formula.

"Design (d) is the differential, which function and form make out of technology (T), ergonomics (E), sociology (S), ecology (E), psychology (P), and philosophy (P), exponentiated with individuality (brand or designer), depending on time (t) and in relation to the presentation (P) in 4, 3, 2, or 1 dimensional expression."
